10 Instagrams to Free Your Inner Bohemian

October 12, 2016 by Kristen Philipkoski Filed Under: Art & Design, Home 4 Comments

Something that became clear while preparing for my photoshoot with the Chronicle was that while I’ve tried to fight it over the years, I am a diehard hippie at heart. When Kourosh and I bought our first home together in San Francisco in 2005 (terrible time to buy real estate, btw), I tried to keep things minimal. I’m not sure what forces were conspiring to push me in that direction—I think minimal was a big trend at the time—but I tried to reign in my bohemian tendencies, for whatever reason.

But then my mother-in-law brought me some amazing kilim pillows from Iran, and my inner bohemian was let loose. Every year since then I’ve accumulated more plants, more pillows, more baskets, more textiles (and more shag carpet, incidentally). The result is, I feel much more at home in my home.

I guess it just goes to show you can’t fight your own personality, and why would you want to? Feeling comfortable in one’s own skin (and, consequently, in one’s own home) is one of the things that makes getting older tolerable and, maybe, a pleasure?

If you, too, love a wild home with tons of texture, take a look at these Instagram accounts for kindred spirits and plenty of inspiration.

this is my dream come true #collaboration with @couleurlocaleconceptstore ! I’m so excited to share this beautiful Lombok fish trap pendant. I have been searching a few years for one. This pendant was way beyond my expectations! Such exquisite craftsmanship, I can’t believe it is hand made! – don’t you also want to use it as a pendant rather than catching fish?!:) Please check her feed and amazing store, you won’t be disappointed!xx — please tap for sources — linen, turkish pillow, chinese bench, chinese stool, chinese washboard

Yesterday I went to my first transformational festival. It was geared towards aligning yourself so you can be the most true and authentic version of yourself. Only when you are in this state can you truly help others. When you are unafraid and unwavering, you are unstoppable. The type of environment that this event created was one I’ll never forget. Everyone was incredibly open, honest and real. They put their guards down in hopes that their personal stories might make someone else’s light shine a bit brighter. So much can be learned from these raw, unfiltered conversations, because we all essentially want the same thing. Thank you @beachlane for the reminder 🙂 #infinite and #limitless

I posted this wall basket for sale on the @coast2coastvintage shop yesterday for about 17 seconds until I realized I needed it for above this bed. Lots of other items up for sale, including this 1940s blanket, or I might change my mind on it too… #currentdesignsituation
