On Friday night, the California College of the Arts held its annual graduation fashion show, sending the collections of 13 rising stars down the runway. The show opened to a jam-packed audience under a chic tent on the school’s Portrero Hill campus. Lights, cameras, cheers, and rad music kickstarted a catwalk extravaganza of 13 individual collections, followed by a handful of participating students in the school’s Fashioning Functional Gear course. The student designs were well-constructed and ranged from understated, modern ready-to-wear chic to futurist Tron-like shockers. To close the evening, Surface Magazine‘s style director Gregory Wein awarded Ashley Eva Brock (Stone, Ocean, and Sky) the magazine’s Emerging Designer award, and both Brock and James S. Zormeir ([+][-]) won internships in New York City—Brock says she is eagerly awaiting details on exactly where that will be!
And while I thought Zormeir’s winning futuristic neon explosion—like the cut-out cropped jacket below—was off the hook, what really sent my heart racing were Lauren Levin’s floor-grazing minimalist gowns from her collection [Un]Developing.
