I fell in love with the models’ hair at Rebecca Minkoff‘s fall 2011 runway show at New York Fashion Week. They had big, sexy waves that were one primp beyond my typical air-dry routine (or non-routine, as it were). The look didn’t seem achievable by just spritzing and scrunching — it required a little somethin’ somethin’ but I had no idea what (to get the full effect of the bouncy waves, watch the runway video after the jump). Just after the show I wandered across the street to the Empire Hotel (which quickly became my watering hole between shows. Eve held the door for me there! She is polite!), and super lucky for me I sat next to Jennifer Mapp Bressan, who happens to be the brand manager for Cibu hair products. What are the chances? She promised to email me with a how-to on creating the Minkoff hair, and she was true to her word. Turns out it’s pretty easy, and I can’t wait to try it. Jennifer has mailed me the necessary products (bless her!) and I promise put them to the test ASAP and report back. In the meantime, if you want to give super sexy, voluminous, wavy hair a try (and why would you not?), here’s how. Do let us know how it turns out!
Jennifer Mapp Bressan’s guide to creating rumpled #NYFWaves:
Ideal for shoulder length hair or longer, straight to slightly wavy, this look is a soft, slightly messy, beach-wave style. If you look closely you’ll see the ends aren’t perfect. There are slight crimps, which adds to the nonchalant, model who just rolled out of the photographer’s bed effect: imperfect and sexy.
Straight or wavy hair
• Apply Volumizing Mousse (Cibu Mousse Lee or similar) evenly through damp hair, working product under hair and down to root with fingers or wide tooth comb
• Loosely braid hair in four sections , clip bottoms or secure with hair tie (not too tight)
• Using low, warm setting of blow dryer, dry hair 90% or allow to air dry (try it overnight)
• Rub a nickel size serving of Pliable Pomade or Curl Setting Crème between fingers and over waves for added texture and definition (Cibu Origumi Creative Paste, Cibu Spring Roll Curl Shaping Crème or similar)
• Set with Medium Hold Hairspray (Cibu Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray or similar)
Curly hair
• Apply Curl Setting Crème (Cibu Spring Roll Curl Shaping Crème or similar) to damp hair
• Dry to about 85 percent with diffuser to melt Curl Setting Crème and coat the hair
• Create a loose bun on both sides of the head, secure with bobby pins (think Princess Leah)
• Dry the rest of the way with hair dryer on low heat or air dry complete
• Touch up/create deeper waves with a large barrel curling iron
• Rub a nickel size serving of Pliable Pomade or Curl Setting Crème between fingers and over waves for added texture and definition (Cibu Origumi Creative Paste, Cibu Spring Roll Curl Shaping Crème or similar)
• Work fingers through to seperate
• Set with Medium Hold Hairspray (Cibu Pho Finish Workable Finishing Spray or similar)
