You probably know Ancestry.com for its reputation as a tool for tracking down distant relatives in hopes that you might have royal blood (which you always knew deep down). But the site also has some great content, including excerpts from Gentleman’s Magazine from 1731 to 1868, tons of local papers, and most recently, the Sears catalog from 1896 to 1993. Sure, these periodicals are great for clues if you’re doing genealogy research, but they’re also super fun to gawk at if you appreciate the history of fashion and style. Since the catalog was in its heyday during the time the Mad Men HBO series is set, the Ancestry folks have created holiday gift lists for some of the key characters. We think they’re pretty spot on:
How dreamy would it be to have Don Draper on your holiday gift-giving list? With so much competition (including a pesky fiance!), it couldn’t hurt to attach some mistletoe to the ribbon. I think he might like these stylish pajamas, just in case that mistletoe really does the trick. He might also like an oxford, a fedora, a watch and maybe a suit, since he wears one every day. He might also be in the market for a tuxedo jacket for his upcoming wedding, but we don’t really want to encourage that now, do we?
As Betty prepares to move into a new house with Harry, she’s got decorating on her mind. We’re thinking she might want to ditch the pink and proper decor (though we did love that turquoise headboard) and get a little more exotic. She also needs the basics, including silverware, storage and, of course, a bar. And since she fired Carla, a modern built-in dishwasher is essential.
Whether she’s looking for just the right power outfit for a workday at Sterling, Cooper, Draper, Fisher, Pryce, something more feminine for the annual office holiday shenanigans, or the perfect Bohemian poncho for her forays to the Village with Joyce, Sears has Peggy covered.
Joan’s got a bun in the oven, so her wardrobe will change drastically in season five. It will be interesting to see her transformation from signature skin-tight sheath dresses to maternity frocks, but we know she’ll manage the transition with aplomb. And with her body going through such big (but temporary) changes, she might want to focus on baubles more than clothing.
